New Yorkers planning a visit to the Department of Motor Vehicles might need to reschedule as all DMV offices across the state are gearing up for a temporary closure. Set to commence at 2 p.m. on Feb. 13, the shutdown will last until Feb. 18 while the DMV undertakes a comprehensive system upgrade, as reported by PIX11.
During this period, not only the physical locations but also online and phone services will be unavailable. The pending upgrade involves moving to a state-of-the-art, consolidated system. This ambitious move aims to replace "hundreds of software applications, some of which date back to the days of Nelson Rockefeller," DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder explained in a statement obtained by PIX11. He continued, saying, "I truly believe it will give our staff the ability to serve New Yorkers better, faster, and more comprehensively than ever before."
The decision follows a series of improvements by the DMV to enhance customer service options in-person, online, and on the phone. These recent closures are a part of their ongoing efforts to modernize systems with the help of a reputed software company that has experience with similar projects in over 15 states, as detailed by Spectrum News.
Further information on office closures around the a state can be found on the DMV's official closings page. The DMV is also reminding the public that this shutdown will lay the groundwork for the second stage of the upgrade project.
