New York's got itself a new claim to fame in the tech world, with Radical AI laying the groundwork for the state's first fully autonomous materials science lab over at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, and backed by a sizable dollop of tax credits up to $2 million through the Excelsior Jobs Program, this facility is apparently set to change the game in the materials science sector. The talk is that this $4 million project will be churning out around 100 AI-driven experiments each day, providing a substantial boost to the city's tech job market with 115 high-wage positions up for grabs.
According to an announcement from the Governor's Office, Radical AI is not just looking to speed up the research process; they're trying to compress material discovery timelines from decades to mere months or years. The Brooklyn Navy Yard, once a symbol of industrial prowess, is set to become a hub for AI, materials science, and some serious job creation. Empire State Development’s big cheese, CEO Hope Knight, talked about how this project is showing off the power and diversity of New York's innovation economy.
It's no small feat, with Radical AI's CEO Joseph Krause saying that their spot at Building 20 is going to be a bit of a material experimentation wonderland, "capturing experimental data that makes our AI smarter over time in a continuous data feedback loop," as he put it in a statement obtained by the Governor's Office. And it's clear that New York's aiming to keep its footprint firmly planted in the future of tech, investing not just in Radical AI's vision but in keeping the state a go-to spot for companies looking to push the limits of science and tech. This lab, specifically, will be honing in on discovering the next wave of materials that could potentially revolutionize industries like aerospace, energy, and defense, according to the plan.
Justin Kreamer, Senior Vice President of Partnerships at the New York City Economic Development Corporation, noted Radical AI’s move to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The project is part of efforts to develop New York City’s AI and materials science sectors.
Radical AI’s presence at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is intended to support innovation across the city’s industries, including clean energy and advanced manufacturing. Empire State Development, the state’s economic development agency, oversees initiatives to promote growth in technology, support small businesses, and maintain tourism programs such as I LOVE NY.
