An early morning knock at the door turned into a nightmare at a Northeast Side apartment complex on Wednesday, when a man was shot inside his own unit after letting two women in, according to police. The victim, hit in the upper leg, managed to use a belt as a makeshift tourniquet and staggered to a neighbor’s door for help before being rushed to a hospital. Officers say the investigation is still very much in motion.
What Police Say Happened
The shooting unfolded just before 6 a.m. at the Salado Creek Villas off Northeast Loop 410 near Starcrest Drive, according to News 4 San Antonio. Investigators were told the two women knocked on the man’s door and were allowed inside. Once in the apartment, one of them pulled out a handgun and fired, striking him in the upper leg.
Police say the women took off in a silver vehicle. The wounded man improvised with a belt to slow the bleeding, then got help from a neighbor, who called 911. He was transported to a hospital, and officers began canvassing the area for evidence and surveillance video.
Neighbors Already on Edge
The attack lands in a part of the Northeast Side where residents say late-night and early-morning gunfire has become an unwelcome soundtrack. Neighbors have told reporters they are frustrated that bursts of shots are often over by the time officers arrive, and that the constant noise has some families sleeping a little closer to the floor than they used to.
KSAT reported earlier this month that people along one Northeast Side corridor have repeatedly woken up to gunshots, describing a pattern that has left them anxious and on edge.
Investigation Still Unfolding
The San Antonio Police Department told News 4 San Antonio that detectives are actively working the case. Police have not released the man’s current condition and have not publicly identified any suspects. The description of the women or more details about the silver vehicle have not been made public.
Anyone with information about the shooting or the vehicle involved is urged to contact the San Antonio Police Department. No arrests have been announced.
We will update this report as officials release more information.
