The City of Novato is doubling down on inclusion and the arts, thanks to a thriving partnership with Alchemia, a nonprofit organization that champions artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Voices & Visions initiative, which had a warm reception from the community last year, is expanding to feature installations at six kiosks along Grant Avenue in downtown Novato.
SFGATE reports that this initiative is a continuation of a successful collaboration, started as a Leadership Novato project through the Novato Chamber of Commerce. "This initiative demonstrates how art can strengthen community connection," Katie Gauntlett, director of Parks, Recreation & Community Services, said. By spotlighting artists with disabilities, the city aims to foster inclusion and ensure that public spaces mirror the community's diverse fabric.
Alchemia, founded in 1998, has long advocated for the creative voice of the IDD community, providing essential resources such as professional studio space, mentorship, and exhibition opportunities. This partnership with the city aligns with their mission, celebrating the artistic achievements of these individuals and providing an avenue to reach a broader audience.
Those interested can explore the art both in person and virtually. The Downtown Novato gallery at 1123 Grant Avenue displays an array of works by Alchemia artists year-round; the organization's website also features an online showcase. According to the City of Novato, the public is encouraged to visit novato.gov/alchemia to get more details about this collaborative project.
