An off-duty firefighter from Glendale, identified as Andrew Jimenez, 45, has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of his wife, Mayra Jimenez, 55, who was found dead in their North Hollywood residence. According to ABC7, authorities responded to a welfare check early Wednesday morning, which led to the grim find of the victim with injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.
Jimenez, who has served in the Glendale Fire Department since April 28, 2008, is currently being held on a $2 million bail, as per court records. An attorney retained by the Jimenez family released a statement, further complicating the narrative with details of a personal nature, "Our office is currently in contact with law enforcement regarding a diary of the decedent, apparently read moments before the homicide, that verified infidelity by the decedent," the statement read. This was reported by ABC7.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles Police Department's official statement reflected that the murder appears to be an isolated incident of domestic violence. "This tragic incident was an isolated event and there is no threat to public safety," the LAPD announced. Andrew Jimenez, who shares a residence and was in a marital relationship with the victim, is now facing murder charges, his bail reflecting the gravity of the accusations against him.
Neighbors and friends of Mayra Jimenez recall her fondly, remembering her contributions to the community as a teacher at Wilshire Park Elementary and her work as a non-denominational ordained minister. According to a neighbor's account to ABC7, detectives described the crime scene as "horrific" and noted the discovery of an axe, adding a macabre detail to the already tragic event. The couple had been married for over 10 years, with Mayra known for her passion in helping others and her avid support for the Dodgers.
The investigation is ongoing, and LAPD has encouraged anyone with information about this incident to come forward. Authorities are available for contact during business and non-business hours, and tips can be made anonymously through the LA Regional Crime Stoppers website or the “P3 Tips” mobile application. The City of Glendale has yet to provide further comment on the incident as they've placed Andrew Jimenez on administrative leave, per their previous statement.
