An off-duty Michigan State Police trooper's quick action and expertise are being lauded after his timely intervention potentially saved a skier's life at Nub's Nob Ski Resort. Sgt. Dennis Wagner was enjoying a day of cross-country skiing on January 3 when he came across an emergency involving a skier who had collapsed. According to FOX 2 Detroit, Wagner immediately assisted the unresponsive skier by rolling him over and initiating the lifesaving process.
Joining forces with the resort's employees and other skiers, Wagner, who is stationed at MSP's St. Ignace Post, demonstrated his readiness to employ his skills beyond his professional duties. "Sergeant Wagner assisted by rolling the subject over, positioning his head uphill, opening the airway and initiating chest compressions," MSP shared in a statement on social media. As reported by WOODTV, the patient, later identified as Kevin Livingston, received timely treatment thanks to the combined efforts of Wagner and the ski patrol. Livingston required two shocks from an automated external defibrillator provided by the Nub’s Nob Ski Patrol, who swiftly arrived on the scene with the necessary equipment.
The successful resuscitation led to Livingston, who turns out to be an accomplished American cyclist formerly of the US Postal team, regaining his pulse and breathing on his own. "Medical staff later confirmed early CPR and use of the AED were critical," emphasized UpNorthLive, sharing further insight into the incident and the importance of the immediate response. Livingston has since made a positive turnaround and is expected to fully recover from the episode.
