Ohioans traversing the state's roads might soon be traveling more safely, thanks to a sizable investment in roadway safety improvements. Governor Mike DeWine, alongside Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Director Pamela Boratyn, has unveiled a plan for 39 transportation projects aimed at enhancing safety across 27 counties. A $97.2 million fund from ODOT's Highway Safety Improvement Program, touted as the country's largest safety program based on per capita spending, is set to back these initiatives.
The program's infusion comes at a time when Ohio has been witnessing a positive trend—a record of four consecutive years of reduced road fatalities and serious injuries. "We want Ohioans to get from place to place safely," Ohio Governor Mike DeWine communicated in a release, emphasizing the importance placed upon road design and safety features that contribute to this objective. The full spectrum of improvements, detailed in a list of traffic safety grant awards, spans from more visible signage to high-visibility crosswalks, catering to both drivers and pedestrians alike.
The scope of the projects is far-reaching, as they are envisaged to roll out over the course of several fiscal years, from 2026 through 2031. According to ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn, the initiatives are a response to a strategic and data-driven analysis of crash occurrences. "These projects represent a strategic, data-driven approach to reducing deadly and serious injury crashes on Ohio roadways," Boratyn said in an announcement. The approach combines "proven safety countermeasures with proactive improvements", aiming to intercept the risk of crashes before they occur and are funded for locations where previous safety measures haven't yielded the desired effect.
