Residents of Columbus, Cincinnati, and Wilmington are bracing for a wet and warm week ahead as forecasted by the National Weather Service Wilmington OH. Rain is expected to drizzle into the Ohio Valley today, followed by a surge in warmer temperatures throughout the week. "A weak disturbance will shift east through the Lower Great Lakes today in zonal flow," the National Weather Service detailed, hinting at possible light rain for the afternoon hours. Furthermore, locals can anticipate much warmer weather this week, with temperatures holding above the seasonal averages for early January.
The short-term relief from the rain will be quickly replaced by a chance of more widespread rainfall later in the week. A series of low-pressure waves is set to roll through the region late Thursday into Friday, bringing more rain to the area. The opportunity to briefly enjoy the higher temperatures might come at the cost of grabbing an umbrella on the way out. The National Weather Service added, "While forcing remains shallow and weak, enough moisture will be pulled into the Ohio Valley to produce thick clouds and periods of drizzle or light rain."
Despite the prospect of damp conditions, the mercury won't be plummeting just yet. "Temperatures will remain above normal with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s," indicated the weather service's forecast discussing Wednesday's outlook. However, as the weekend approaches, colder air is expected to return to the forecast, potentially bringing a light wintry mix to watch out for.
Weather watchers are particularly eyeing Thursday into Saturday, as moisture level anomalies could soar to more than 300% above the seasonal norm, leading to efficient rainfall rates. However, the progressive nature of the system should mitigate the risk for extensive flooding. "Probs of at least 1 of rain are fairly high (>60%) for locales near/SE of I-71 the 48-hr period," the National Weather Service said, signaling the guard should be kept up for those areas. Conditions will turn sharply as we head into the weekend, with a substantial cooldown and the possibility of snow showers accompanying the exiting rain system.
The late-week systems will also impact aviation conditions, potentially leading to MVFR ceilings as early as Wednesday morning. Pilots should prepare for possible MVFR to IFR conditions Thursday through Friday night. For updated aviation and weather forecasts, visit the National Weather Service Wilmington OH.
