Residents in the Columbus and Cincinnati areas woke up to a blanket of snow this Sunday morning as a low-pressure system made its journey east through the Great Lakes. The National Weather Service advised that snow showers, which started developing early in the morning, will continue throughout the day, leading to variable road conditions across the Ohio Valley.
The snow showers are predicted to drop in intensity throughout the day, with gusty westerly winds (25-30 mph) also occurring through the day today, as per the latest update from the weather service. Despite the initial concerns of up to two inches of snow, latest observations suggest that such accumulations are now unlikely, with the snow favoring grassy and raised surfaces over the roads.
With the snowfall expected to taper off between 18Z-22Z, the clean-up might be short-lived as another weather system is anticipated to bring additional bouts of rain and snow by Wednesday, and a dip in temperatures toward the end of the week. Monday, however, should offer a brief respite with dry conditions and highs in the upper 30s to mid-40s.
The outlook heading into the rest of the week indicates more volatile weather. Breezy conditions are also expected on Tuesday with gusts of 25-35 MPH possible, according to the forecast discussion. Highs on Tuesday could reach a pleasant middle 40s to lower 50s before the shortwave energy arrives, diving through the Midwest and likely leading to rainfall Tuesday night and a complete transition to snow by Wednesday night. Some light accumulations are expected, which could impact midweek commutes and day-to-day activities.
For those planning on air travel or expecting arrivals at regional airports, the snow showers may affect visibility, leading to MVFR to IFR conditions throughout the morning and early afternoon. Pilots and travelers alike should be prepared for potential delays, as lower visibilities and gusty winds are anticipated, although conditions should clear up by late afternoon or early evening. As the work week progresses, the area may experience another cycle of snow showers from Wednesday through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
