More than 100 vehicles tangled together in chaos on Michigan's I-196 near Zeeland Township after a snow squall quickly engulfed the area, causing severe visibility issues and a catastrophic pileup. According to ClickOnDetroit, the incident occurred this morning and led to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office responding to numerous injuries, though thankfully, there have been no fatalities reported.
As snow continued to relentlessly fall and wind worsened conditions, Michigan State Police confirmed the involvement of an estimated 30-40 semi-trucks in the pileup. The highway was shut down in both directions between Hudsonville and Zeeland roads, according to a FOX 2 Detroit report. In an effort to efficiently rescue those stranded, school buses from Hudsonville Public Schools and MAX Transit were quickly organized to bus out drivers and passengers to Hudsonville High School, where they were able to seek shelter and plan for rideshome.
Bystanders and those involved captured the scale of devastation, with images of jackknifed trucks and damaged cars lining the highway shoulders. "Chicago & Midwest Storm Chasers" shared visuals on Facebook that displayed the extent of the scene. While the main wreckage involved over a hundred cars, additional vehicles slid off the freeway in attempts to brake, leading to multiple slide-offs and fender benders reported by WZZM 13 across West Michigan in light of the continued hazardous conditions.
Authorities have been diligently working to treat those who are injured, with ambulances and fire services ferrying the wounded to local hospitals. Motorists stranded by the crash were urged to remain inside their vehicles until the opportunity to board transport out of the scene presented itself. The Michigan roadway is expected to stay closed for several hours as cleanup crews labor to clear up the consequence of nature's sudden fury. With such treacherous road conditions, local services advised against travel on Monday if possible, due to the persisting winter weather challenges.
