An overturned 18-wheeler caused significant traffic disruption on Highway 87 near Fredericksburg, as reported by CBS Austin. The incident, which occurred early Friday morning, shut down the southbound lanes and required extensive efforts to clear the scene.
Gillespie County Sheriff Chris Ayala told CBS Austin that the road would remain closed while crews worked to first unload, then remove the disabled vehicle. With slippery conditions across the area, officials have directed northbound traffic to detour via Highway 16 South to Interstate 10 from Kerrville, allowing access to Boerne through FM 1376 at Highway 290 East.
Further details from an article by KVUE highlight that emergency crews were called around 7 a.m. Wednesday to address the situation where the 18-wheeler had overturned near U.S. 87 South and Bear Creek Road. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained during the accident.
Necessitating the road closure, crews had to address the logistical task of unloading meat from the truck before it could be safely moved. Initially, traffic had still been able to pass in one lane in either direction, but by 10 a.m., Sheriff Ayala, stating that the complete closure of U.S. 87 South for the removal of the truck could span from 30 minutes to an hour, was completely relying on how swiftly the process unfolded, as per KVUE. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes to avoid the affected section of U.S. 87 South in Fredericksburg.
