In a series of prosecutorial updates, the DA has laid out charges for two separate shooting incidents that occurred in the city on New Year's Day, 2026. Details from a recent Philadelphia District Attorney's Office press release reveal that in Northeast Philadelphia, two individuals have been charged in connection with a triple shooting homicide. One victim was found with gunshot wounds in the front yard of the 7100 Block of Oakland Street and later died at Jefferson–Torresdale Hospital, while another was dropped off at Temple Hospital with fatal chest and leg injuries.
Defendant Tyriq Williams faces multiple charges, including two counts of murder and conspiracy, and defendant Cara Williams Reeves has been charged with similar counts as well as evidence tampering and assault. Witnesses identified the defendants, with a firearm found by police at Temple Hospital, one from Williams and another recovered from the Oakland Street scene. Suffering from a gunshot injury to his left hand, defendant Tyriq Williams also became a casualty of the violence that he is alleged to have played a part in.
In a separate incident in West Philadelphia, Shamar Norris faces several charges, including aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child, after his 3-year-old son was admitted to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with a gunshot wound. The shootout took place in the bedroom at the 900 Block of North 42nd Street, where the gun was later found by an eyewitness who guided investigators.
District Attorney Larry Krasner expressed deep dismay regarding the violence affecting children: "We are outraged at the thought of a 3 year-old being the victim of gun violence in Philadelphia." He went on to promise that his office would work closely with police to "ensure both of these senseless gun-related crimes and cases are prosecuted with vigor and determination in pursuit of justice for each of the victims." The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has reportedly started to reach out to families and communities impacted by these tragic events, offering support on their path toward healing.
