The Philadelphia Streets Department has put into motion a snow removal operation around Center City that commenced this afternoon, specifically targeting the area around City Hall. This heavy-lifting initiative involves an extensive fleet of vehicles such as excavators and loaders, designed for the purpose of excavating, loading, and hauling away the accumulated snow. According to the City of Philadelphia statement, Penn Square and nearby blocks will be shut down starting at 4 p.m. today, lasting until midnight for this operation.
Ahead of this closure, specific roads to be blocked off include Penn Square around City Hall, North Broad, South Broad, 15th Street, JFK Boulevard, and stretches of East and West Market Street. To ensure the safety of the workers and the public, these closures will span from Arch Street to Chestnut Street, continuing along crucial junctures surrounding City Hall. Previously, similar operations have been tackling the snow in North Philly along paths like Girard Avenue since the past Sunday evening.
Featuring over 200 vehicles and organized into 14 teams, these snow removal efforts are part of a citywide strategy, outlined by officials. Crews work meticulously to clear snow from narrower roads, amass it on main streets, load it into trucks, and then transport it to designated snow storage areas. According to the same city announcement, this persistent work also includes continual plowing and salting and will carry on until all Philadelphia roadways, whether primary, secondary, or tertiary, have been serviced.
While these operations are ongoing, the Streets Department urges residents to keep travel to a minimum. For those who need to be on the roads, the department is asking to plan for additional travel time, proceed with caution, and respect the work zones by maintaining a safe distance from the crews. They emphasize that this will help ensure the safety and efficiency of these snow-clearing operations.
