A traffic stop turned violent last night in downtown Baltimore, resulting in a 29-year-old man being shot by a police officer. The incident unfolded near the intersection of West Franklin Street, straddling the vibrant Mount Vernon neighborhood and the city’s business district. The shooting occurred at approximately 9:18 p.m., as reported by Fox Baltimore.
Detailed by authorities, the scene began with what should have been a routine traffic stop. A Baltimore officer, noticing what appeared to be a handgun in the possession of the driver, engaged further only to be met with the driver's claim that it was merely a clip. In an attempt to resolve the situation, the officer reached into the vehicle, a decision which then led to the driver accelerating abruptly, dragging the officer down the street and prompting the subsequent shooting. A single bullet, discharged in the melee, wounded the driver, who subsequently sought treatment at a local hospital, CBS News Baltimore confirmed.
The aftermath of the incident saw the vicinity of R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center swarmed with police activity, as officers stood guard near a white car matching the suspect's vehicle description. A woman, asserting her relation to the car and the wounded man as her boyfriend, confronted law enforcement at the scene, implicating one of their own in his injury. The man in question, now released from the hospital, is in police custody.
Investigations continue, with the officer's body camera footage under review to shed further light on the details of the encounter.
