Hays County residents are on high alert as local authorities and health officials have confirmed a concerning rabies outbreak in the area's wildlife population. According to CBS Austin, Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra revealed that the outbreak has primarily affected foxes, which are recognized carriers of the disease in Texas. While there has yet to be an immediate threat to human safety, the seriousness of the disease has prompted official warnings on the potential risks it poses to pets, livestock, and people.
Efforts to tackle the outbreak have involved close collaboration with local healthcare providers and veterinarians to monitor the evolving situation. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is actively ensuring that necessary treatment protocols and resources are promptly available to address human exposures to rabies should they occur. "Hays County officials are working closely with local healthcare and veterinary providers to monitor the situation," in a statement compiled by KXAN.
To reduce the risk of exposure during this outbreak, officials are encouraging residents to get their pets and livestock vaccinated. Adding precautionary measures, they advise avoiding any contact with wildlife, notably those displaying odd or aggressive behaviors. For cases of suspicious wildlife behavior, residents can report their observations to several organizations, including the Hays County Sheriff's Office, City of San Marcos Animal Services, City of Kyle Animal Control, and City of Buda Animal Control.
For those who may find themselves in contact with rabies or suspect an animal bite, the Hays County Health Department should be contacted immediately. In response to the crisis, several clinics in Hays County will be offering free rabies vaccinations. "PALS Clinic, located at 8401 Ranch Road in San Marcos, will provide free rabies vaccination from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17. No appointment is needed," KXAN reported. Apollo Veterinary Clinic in Wimberley also plans to hold a free vaccination clinic on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and they are accepting call-ahead appointments to prepare for the upcoming visits.
