The National Weather Service Raleigh NC has advised that below-freezing temperatures through mid-morning could maintain slick conditions on the roads. According to an official statement, secondary roads, as well as bridges, overpasses, and sidewalks, are particularly vulnerable, though there have been instances of black ice on main thoroughfares and interstates.
Apart from the immediate threats posed by ice, the weather outlook for the week includes an anticipated winter storm system and notably cold temperatures expected to hit over the weekend. The hazard weather conditions could result in challenging travel and outdoor conditions. As outlined by the National Weather Service, "There is a chance of an impactful winter weather system this weekend," and "very cold temperatures are possible this weekend into early next week."
With a slight chance of rain beginning Wednesday night and a more significant chance of rain and snow by the weekend, the weather could turn from merely cold to a more severe winter landscape. The likelihood of precipitation rises to 60% by Saturday, which could well transition into snow by Saturday night, carrying into Sunday with a 50% chance.
Residents are advised to prepare for the coming weather events by staying informed and being mindful of the conditions. "Be extremely careful during the morning commute. Slow down and give plenty of distance between vehicles," says the Special Weather Statement by the NWS. They also warn the community to be careful when walking outdoors where black ice is a risk, as "slips and falls constitute a leading cause of injuries during winter weather."
