The Raleigh Police Department will implement two new technology initiatives to enhance public safety and operational efficiency, following approval from the Raleigh City Council on Tuesday. The updates include a digital records management system upgrade and the adoption of an advanced taser device, according to the City of Raleigh.

As part of an effort to streamline operations and support de-escalation practices, the Raleigh Police Department will replace its current Keystone records management system with Axon Records. The new system is expected to provide enhanced analytical tools and improved workflow, serving as the department’s central digital database. The 10-year contract with Axon Enterprise will cost the city $1.6 million annually, according to the department’s website.

As the current taser program nears its expiration in October, the Raleigh Police Department will transition to the Taser 10, which offers officers a 45-foot range. The increased distance is intended to provide officers with more time and space to manage potentially volatile situations safely. Police Chief Rico Boyce has expressed support for the upgrade as a measure to enhance officer safety and de-escalation efforts.
