This morning commute on San Antonio's Northwest Side turned chaotic when a driver allegedly ran a red light and plowed into a San Antonio Police Department patrol vehicle, sending two officers to the hospital and shoving their cruiser into a utility pole.
The crash happened just before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Bandera Road and West Loop 1604 North. Police say a woman driving through the intersection failed to stop at her red light and struck the patrol unit broadside, forcing the cruiser off the roadway and into a pole. Emergency responders rushed both officers to a local hospital.
One officer suffered a head injury, and the other reported neck and back injuries. Both were described as alert and talking and are expected to be okay, according to News 4 San Antonio. The driver of the other vehicle was not hurt, and police said no charges were expected at this time.
Investigation And Roadway Impact
SAPD investigators stayed on scene to document the wreck while utility crews checked the damaged pole and work crews focused on clearing the roadway. The collision briefly backed up traffic on Bandera and Loop 1604 as tow trucks and emergency personnel removed the damaged vehicles and scattered debris.
Local Context
Crashes involving patrol vehicles are not unheard of in San Antonio. A November incident, for example, pushed vehicles off the roadway and led to precautionary hospital checks for officers, as reported by MySA. Police say the investigation into Monday's crash remains active, and additional details have not yet been released.
SAPD has not yet released the names of the officers, citing the need to notify family members and wait for medical updates. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact SAPD's traffic unit as the probe continues.
