Attention, young nature enthusiasts of Reno! The city has rolled out the 2026 Junior Ranger Program schedule, promising a year packed with outdoor adventure and learning opportunities that cater to all ages and skill levels. According to the City of Reno's recent news release, the initiative invites participants to explore the beautiful parks of Reno and become stewards of the environment while working to earn an official Junior Ranger badge.
For those ready to embark on this green journey, the program boasts two activities per month, taking place in six different parks around the city in rotation, spanning from January through the December of this year. And in a delightful twist this year, eager beavers looking to become Junior Rangers can now access the guide either by snagging a physical copy at any City of Reno's recreation facility or by conveniently downloading it online - a nifty move that caters to both traditionalists and tech aficionados alike.
With the first event of the program at Idlewild Park kicking off on January 9 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., participants can expect to dive into the world of birding. In the company of a City of Reno Park Ranger, they'll learn how to spot and observe a plethora of diverse feathered friends. Excitingly, there's no need to RSVP to these free activities; however, it's worth noting that they operate on a first-come, first-served basis, as mentioned on the City of Reno's website.
Children who are under 18 will need to keep their parent or guardian close, as they'll need to be present for all events. After completing six activities and earning the corresponding stickers, participants will be treated to a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for January of the following year, where they will receive their hard-earned badges. And don't forget to check out the City’s Parks Activities page for more in-depth details on each of the planned activities if you or your young ones are keen on joining the program's ranks.
