Students at Roosevelt High School on San Antonio’s northeast side walked out of afternoon classes on Wednesday to protest reported Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the area. They gathered on campus around 1:45 p.m., chanting and holding signs in support of protections for immigrant classmates.
The walkout reflected similar demonstrations at other local schools over the past two weeks, according to Fox San Antonio. Administrators warned students leaving campus they would not be allowed back for the rest of the day, and the district had not released an official statement at the time of reporting.
Other Local Actions This Month
The Roosevelt protest did not pop up in a vacuum. Dozens of students at Taft High School staged a walkout last week, with Northside ISD saying participants left during lunch and then returned, per KSAT. At least 100 people also rallied outside City Hall on Jan. 20 for a “Free America” walkout organized by local advocacy groups, as reported by San Antonio Express-News.
Roosevelt High And The District
Roosevelt High belongs to the North East Independent School District, and the campus is listed at 5110 Walzem Road on the school’s official page. The district site provides contact information for campus administrators, and Fox reported that no formal district statement on the walkout had been posted as of Wednesday afternoon.
Why Students Are Mobilizing
The local demonstrations are part of a broader national wave of protests following recent high-profile enforcement actions and deadly encounters involving federal immigration agents, which have sparked legal challenges and mass demonstrations, as noted by Los Angeles Times. Students and organizers say that ICE activity near neighborhoods and schools has fueled fear, and local rallies have leaned on solidarity and know your rights messaging within wider calls for policy change.
Organizers and students described the Roosevelt walkout as a peaceful show of support for immigrant neighbors. The San Antonio Express-News reported that the downtown City Hall demonstration remained orderly and that no arrests were made there. Fox San Antonio continues to list the Roosevelt walkout as a developing story.
