San Antonio International Airport is pushing forward with several planning and design initiatives set to elevate its infrastructure and deliver a more seamless experience for travelers. In a recent City Council B Session, councilmembers were filled in on the details of these key modernizations – covering everything from runway upgrades to terminal reconfigurations.
As reported by the City of San Antonio's website, the ASEIP project under discussion includes significant upgrades to Runway 13L-31R and corresponding taxiway facilities. Engaged with the Airfield Safety Enhancement and Improvements Program, councilmembers took a look at the post-solicitation update that will shift the program's design phase from 30% to completion by 2030. Improving upon a Strategic Development Plan greenlit by City Council in 2021, this effort bows to long-term growth and safety ambitions for SAT.
The discussion then transitioned to SAT’s Terminal A and B Reconfiguration and Rehabilitation Program (TABRR). With intentions to refine passenger areas, the briefing focused on upgrading hold rooms, restrooms, and various finishes. The touch base detailed how a construction manager at risk will be partnered closely with an architectural design firm to hit a finish line by Summer 2028 – just in time for the terminal facility's grand opening.
Finally, councilmembers were brought up to speed about the proposed Centralized Receiving and Distribution Center (CRDC) at SAT. This facility, outlined before solicitation, will act as a singular secure entry point for concessions-related goods, ensuring they're checked, stored, and eventually, handed off airside. According to the statements made during the session, a third-party operator, to be found through an RFP process, would oversee the CRDC's day-to-day tasks from logistics to security screening, according to the City of San Antonio.
These initiatives mark SAT's steadfast journey towards not only addressing current capacity and operational efficiency needs but also laying the groundwork for anticipated growth. For passengers, the payoff is a prospect of improved experiences as SAT hones its ability to facilitate travel in a modernized, safe, and efficient environment.
