Residents of Sanger, Texas, have been issued a firm reminder by the local police concerning the use of off-road vehicles on public streets. A recent social media post from the Sanger Police Department has outlined the increase in unauthorized vehicles spotted on the roadways, advising citizens of the rules that govern their use. Acknowledging the allure of ATVs and similar modes of unconventional transportation, the department reiterated that these types of vehicles are largely prohibited from public roadways, carving out exceptions only for certain instances such as agricultural or law enforcement purposes, according to their statement.
Detailing further, the Sanger Police explained specific scenarios where the operation of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV) or Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV) might be considered legal in Texas. For example, within master planned communities with the right covenants and when engaging in direct travel to and from a golf course, these vehicles may be allowed on public roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less during daylight hours. They also mentioned that to cross an intersection, this is permitted, even if the intersecting road has a speed limit that exceeds 35 mph.
This departure from standard vehicle requirements calls for an Off-Highway Vehicle license plate to be displayed when taking advantage of these rare exemptions. Moreover, the Sanger Police Department advised that any city or county needs to specifically authorize the operation of these vehicles, and when granted, the vehicle must be confined to roads with a speed limit not exceeding 35 mph. In line with safety measures, a slow-moving vehicle emblem must be displayed when the vehicle travels at 25 mph or less. Despite these allowances, the Sanger Police Department sternly conveyed through their online post that "The City of Sanger does NOT have an ordinance authorizing the operation of ATVs, ROVs, UTVs, Sand Rails, or similar vehicles on our streets," making it clear that these types of vehicles are not permitted to roam freely on Sanger's streets.
