A Snohomish County family is taking legal action against the online gaming platform Roblox, with allegations that their 12-year-old daughter was subjected to sexual exploitation by an adult man posing as a child while using the service. The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, detailed an October 2023 incident in which the man reportedly used grooming tactics and manipulation to coerce the girl into a pseudo-relationship and to send explicit images. According to KING 5, Jamie Powers of Dolman Law Group, representing the family, mentioned that this is part of a troubling pattern they see nationwide, with similar cases filed across the country.
Moreover, the family's lawsuits suggest that Roblox has systematically failed to implement sufficient protections for its predominantly young user base. Indeed, investigations have revealed deeply concerning activities on the platform. A search for "adult" on Roblox revealed a chat-room group with members openly trading child pornography and soliciting minors for sexual acts, as detailed by MyNorthwest. The lawsuits echo the platform's previous knowledge of such misconduct and argue that, despite this, profit and growth have been given precedence over safeguarding children.
The plaintiff's attorneys are pushing for Roblox to be seen not just as a neutral platform but as a product with inherent responsibilities, citing the company's targeted marketing towards children. Steve Tapia, a Seattle University School of Law professor, shared with KING 5 the opinion that if a company maintains a playground, it has the duty to ensure it is safe from dangerous elements.
Roblox responded to the allegations by reaffirming its commitment to user safety, saying it is deeply concerned about any incident that puts users at risk and aims to set a high standard for online safety. The company emphasized that protecting its community is a top priority and pointed to safeguards such as restricted chat features for younger users and filters designed to block the sharing of personal information, as obtained by both MyNorthwest and KOMO News. Roblox has committed to continuous improvement of its safety features, including an advanced facial age estimation technology to prevent adults from communicating with child users.
The outcries in these cases resonate with a larger, ongoing discourse on the accountability of online platforms when it comes to child safety. This lawsuit not only seeks justice for the individual victim but also challenges broader industry practices, aiming to reshape the digital playground where our children spend much of their time.
