A West Las Vegas intersection turned into a crime scene Wednesday night after police say a suspect took a Salvation Army bus, barreled through a red light and slammed into a motorcyclist, killing the rider on impact.
The crash unfolded at Tropicana Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive, a busy crossroads that stayed shut down in every direction for hours as officers documented the scene. Emergency crews pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the intersection, while investigators searched for clues and tracked down a suspect who tried to bolt on foot.
What police say
According to FOX5, the chaos started around 6:30 p.m. in North Las Vegas near 211 W. Judson Avenue, where authorities say a Salvation Army bus was taken. North Las Vegas police launched a pursuit after hearing there might be someone on board, while the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's air unit picked up the bus from above as it moved across the valley.
Officers said the driver pushed the bus hard, driving recklessly until the vehicle began to suffer tire failures during the chase. Despite the mechanical trouble, the bus kept moving long enough to reach the intersection at Tropicana and Grand Canyon, where the deadly collision followed.
City investigators take lead
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Traffic Bureau and Collision Investigation Section typically step in for fatal wrecks involving buses and motorcycles. A prior LVMPD release on a deadly motorcycle-versus-bus crash in 2025 lays out that process, which usually includes collecting physical evidence, reviewing any available video and analyzing traffic lights and vehicle data.
Those same investigative teams are expected to handle the current case. As of Wednesday night, police had not released the victim's name or a formal list of charges for the suspect.
Crash at Tropicana and Grand Canyon Drive
FOX5 reports that the bus ran a red light at Tropicana Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive before hitting the motorcycle, killing the rider at the scene. Officers say the suspect jumped out and tried to run but did not make it far before North Las Vegas and Metro officers caught up and took the person into custody.
Tropicana stayed closed in all directions at the intersection while crash investigators mapped the site, documented debris and worked to clear the wreckage.
Why intersections can be deadly
Intersections along Tropicana have seen tragedy before. In 2024, a separate fatal crash between a motorcyclist and a bus at Tropicana and Jimmy Durante Road was reported by KTNV, after police said the rider ran a red light. Incidents like that highlight just how vulnerable motorcyclists are when traffic signals are ignored or visibility breaks down at major crossings.
Both North Las Vegas police and LVMPD say the investigation into Wednesday's crash is ongoing and have asked anyone with information or video of the incident to contact their agencies. This story will be updated as public officials release more details.
