A domestic fight in a southeast Houston apartment complex burst out into the parking lot last night and ended with a man in the hospital, according to police. Officers say they found the wounded man in the 7400 block of Calhoun Road in Sunnyside and rushed him to a hospital, where he is expected to survive. Early accounts from the scene indicate several people tried to break up the assault before a single shot was fired.

Police Say Domestic Dispute Escalated Fast

Houston police are describing the incident as a domestic assault that spiraled into gunfire outside the complex, as reported by KHOU. Video from the scene shows officers and medics in the parking lot and confirms that an adult man was taken away with at least one gunshot wound.

What Investigators Are Hearing So Far

According to Click2Houston, officers were first dispatched around 9 p.m. for an assault in progress at the complex on Calhoun Road. Not long after, the call was updated to a shooting.

Lt. Larry Crowson told the station that the man who was shot was allegedly assaulting his girlfriend when two women stepped in to help. The boyfriend of one of those women then pulled a gun and fired, hitting the man. The station also reports that HPD posted on X that "Southeast officers are at a shooting scene 7400 Calhoun. Adult male transported in stable condition by HFD. Male was shot during an argument."

How Texas Law Sees It

Texas law allows a person to use force to defend themselves or someone else when they reasonably believe it is immediately necessary. Deadly force is only allowed in limited situations, according to Texas Penal Code Sec. 9.319.32. Whether the man who fired the shot will face charges will hinge on the Houston Police Department's investigation and any decision by prosecutors.

What Comes Next

The department's Major Assaults Division is now handling the follow-up on the case, and investigators have not yet announced any charges, Click2Houston reports. HPD is asking anyone who witnessed the confrontation or has video from the parking lot to contact the department's non-emergency line.
