Houston-based Aki Sushi is rolling into College Station, staking out a prime spot in Northgate at 509 University Drive. The new outpost will sit within easy walking distance of Texas A&M and the heart of student nightlife, positioning the chain squarely in the late-night crowd’s crosshairs. Construction crews are already at work on the space, and the company expects to open sometime this spring, adding another sushi and ramen option to a strip that thrives after dark.
What Now Houston first reported the College Station plans and noted that owner Sun Jiang confirmed the Northgate location but did not yet have a firm opening date. The outlet also pointed to a recently filed permit that lists University Drive as the address for the new restaurant.
State construction records back up the move. A project filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation under number TABS2024014861 lists "Aki Sushi" at 509 University Drive, describing a roughly 4,000-square-foot restaurant build-out with an estimated cost near $275,000. The filing lists a completion date of last Thursday and names Cooley Properties LLC as the property owner, with Alex Yu as the tenant contact, according to Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation records.
The group behind Aki already runs several locations around Greater Houston. Its official site says the brand operates five area spots and serves a mix of steak, sushi and ramen across different concepts. Menus lean heavily on rolls, nigiri and a pork bone broth that, according to the brand, simmers for 48 hours. Concepts include Aki Steak & Sushi in Sugar Land and Aki Sushi & Ramen in League City, and the College Station restaurant appears set to focus on sushi and ramen. Aki emphasizes fresh, high-quality ingredients as a core part of its pitch.
Why 509 University Drive Matters
The address puts Aki right in the thick of Northgate, the student-focused entertainment district that lines up across from Texas A&M. It is a coveted zone for brands chasing campus traffic. A commercial listing for the property cites traffic counts of roughly 45,000 vehicles a day and highlights the cluster of nearby bars and late-night eateries, all of which could play nicely with Aki’s night-owl appeal. LoopNet also stresses the site’s visibility and heavy foot traffic.
How Aki Fits the Local Scene
Aki is not arriving to an empty table. College Station already has a lineup of sushi and Japanese spots, including Aji Sushi, Atami Steak & Sushi and Blue Fin Sushi Fusion. So the Houston import will be joining an existing scene rather than inventing one from scratch. Students and locals already have multiple casual and late-night sushi choices, and Aki’s mix of ramen, nigiri and hibachi-style offerings is set to widen that roster. Local listings such as Sirved show several nearby Japanese options.
Timing And Next Steps
Public information does not entirely line up on when the build-out will wrap. The TDLR record pegs the construction completion date as last Thursday, while What Now Houston has reported that construction is expected to finish in March and that Sun Jiang is targeting a spring opening. We contacted Aki for a confirmed opening date and menu details; the company had not posted a public announcement at the time of publication.
Until a grand opening is officially on the books, College Station diners can pencil in another full-service Japanese option on University Drive and watch as a Houston-born brand plants its flag in the Northgate night scene. This story will be updated when Aki releases an opening date, hiring notices or a menu for the new location.
