The streets of Columbus were the scene of a grim discovery on an October morning last year when 30-year-old Tyris Sowell was found with a gunshot wound on the 3000 block of Templeton Rd. Police responded to the shooting report at approximately 11:01 a.m., as noted in a social media post by the Columbus Division of Police. Sowell's injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead by 11:26 a.m. after being transported to a local hospital.
The investigation rapidly evolved, and law enforcement swiftly identified a suspect, 30-year-old Shaquir Cromwell. On the same day of Sowell's death, a murder warrant was issued for Cromwell's arrest. Almost two months later, on December 12, Cromwell was apprehended far from the Ohio crime scene, in Hollywood, Florida. In a twist of fate, he would not remain free to witness the year's end.
As the wheels of justice continue to grind, Cromwell’s brush with the legal system took a more definitive turn earlier this month. He was indicted last Wednesday, January 7, for aggravated murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence, signaling the onset of a potentially lengthy judicial process. This set of charges suggests the prosecution will pursue an angle of premeditation and deliberate violence in Sowell's untimely demise.
