A man in his mid-30s was critically injured on Tuesday morning on U.S. Highway 90 in San Antonio after a dark-colored SUV hit him while he was crossing the highway with a gas can. He had left his vehicle after it ran out of gas and was struck while trying to return across the road.
Witnesses reported the SUV briefly stopped for someone to collect debris before fleeing the scene. Police are investigating and trying to identify the driver, with officers responding around 10 a.m. near the Highway 90 access road by Westoak Road, according to KSAT.
What Texas Law Says About Leaving the Scene
Walking away from a wreck is not just a bad look in Texas. It can be a felony. Under state law, a driver involved in a crash that causes, or is reasonably likely to cause, injury must stop, return to the scene and render aid. Failing to do so in a case involving serious bodily injury can bring felony charges, as detailed by Texas Transportation Code.
Dangerous Stretch: Why Hwy 90 Matters
U.S. Highway 90 is one of the region’s busiest corridors, a fact that has transportation officials planning a multi-phase expansion to handle the crush of traffic. That work is expected to take years to finish, as noted by MySA. The corridor has also seen serious crashes recently. Earlier this week, a separate incident on Highway 90 left a man dead after he was struck while servicing his truck, a case the San Antonio Express-News reported.
Investigation Underway
San Antonio police said witnesses again stressed that the SUV stopped only to pick up vehicle parts before leaving the scene, and that the driver has not been identified as detectives continue their work. Authorities shut down the Highway 90 access road near Westoak Road for at least an hour while they documented the crash site and collected evidence, according to KSAT. Police did not immediately announce any charges.
