An 18-year-old has been charged in connection with making threats towards Haisley Elementary School in Ann Arbor, as detailed by multiple reports coming in. According to CBS News Detroit, the incident occurred last Friday during dismissal time, and witnessed the suspect was allegedly threatening to harm people with a firearm.
Following the threats, the Ann Arbor Police Department responded promptly and later apprehended the suspect at their residence, according to Ann Arbor police, at which time no firearms were found. Amidst the ongoing investigation, it is confirmed by ClickOnDetroit that the teen was acting alone and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office is reported to have authorized charges, including one felony count of making terroristic threats and one misdemeanor count of making school threats, according to information from FOX 2 Detroit. The prosecution has requested a $250,000 bond for the teen who, upon release from the hospital, is slated for arraignment. The suspect, once released on bond, would need to be monitored by a GPS tether preventing their return to Haisley Elementary.
For the further protection of students and staff, a no-trespass order has been extended to the suspect, restricting them from all Ann Arbor Public Schools properties. "The safety of our students and staff is our priority, and we are taking this situation very seriously. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community. We appreciate the quick response from our school administration and staff, as well as the cooperation and support from our families," a part of the statement from Ann Arbor Public Schools reported by CBS News Detroit.
In response to this incident, Ann Arbor police, alongside district leadership and mental health professionals, plan to be present at Haisley Elementary School when classes resume on Tuesday to ensure the well-being of students and staff. This move aims to offer a hearty reassurance that the school remains, as officials have emphasized, a safe place for learning following the harrowing events.
