In a significant move reflective of the political tussle over education and religious freedoms, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called upon Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD) to cut off any affiliations with CAIR-sponsored events. According to the Office of the Texas Governor, Abbott is now laser-focused on preventing the 2026 Houston Islamic Games, organized by CAIR NJ, from being hosted at Bridgeland High School—a public institution funded by taxpayers.
According to the Office of the Texas Governor, Abbott's letter has stirred significant controversy, stating, "It has come to my attention that Bridgeland High School intends to offer public school facilities to host the 2026 Houston Islamic Games." It further cites Abbott's recent designation of "the Muslim Brotherhood and its successor organization CAIR" as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations under state law, concluding that inviting such entities via school doors is incompatible with the safety and values of Texas communities.
Under Abbott's directive, CFISD is now required to preserve all documentation relating to the event and to confirm the termination of any dealings with the event to the Governor's Office within a seven-day period. Failure to comply has serious implications; the Texas Education Agency (TEA) could be instructed to seize relevant communications and forward findings to the Texas Attorney General for potential legal ramifications.
The ramifications of this directive extend beyond just communication seizures. Should CFISD fail to comply, the Governor has threatened that TEA will pursue legal action, referring its findings immediately to the Texas Attorney General. Abbott continues to bolster his position with additional measures that include requesting the U.S. Secretary Bessent to suspend CAIR’s tax-exempt status and directing the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to initiate investigations into both the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR, according to the Office of the Texas Governor.
As these developments unfold, the discourse around the preservation of public safety and the safeguarding of religious freedoms in educational environments remains tense and divisive. With the Governor's office applying pressure on CFISD, the district's response and the resultant political and community reaction remain to be seen.
