Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced a $30,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Reynaldo Mata-Rios, charged in the December 27, 2025, fatal shooting of Hidalgo County Appraisal District Vice Chairman Eddy Betancourt. The governor urged the public to provide any tips to aid the investigation.
According to the Office of the Texas Governor, Mata-Rios, a 60-year-old Hispanic male, approximately 6 feet tall and 195 pounds, was last seen crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in a red truck on December 28, 2025. He should be considered armed and dangerous. Governor Greg Abbott extended his condolences to Betancourt’s family, saying, “Cecilia and I mourn the tragic loss of Commissioner Eddy Betancourt, and we pray for his family and loved ones.” The governor noted that the state is coordinating with local law enforcement to ensure those responsible face the full weight of the law.
The Governor's office added Mata-Rios to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list, highlighting the urgency of his capture. Authorities are urging anyone with information to call the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline or submit tips online; anonymity is guaranteed by law.
