Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced a significant boost to the state’s semiconductor sector with an over $1,000,000 grant from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund to LTD Material LLC. The company is set to construct a new 88,000-square-foot manufacturing and research facility in Austin, which is expected to generate 40 jobs and involve more than $25 million in capital investment. This move is part of continuing efforts to expand domestic semiconductor manufacturing and curtail reliance on foreign supply chains.
According to a statement released by the Office of the Texas Governor, "Texas leads America's resurgence in semiconductor manufacturing.” He highlighted the crucial role that the expansion of suppliers like LTD Material plays in building a robust infrastructure for this key industry within the state. The upcoming project would not only boost production of high-purity quartz parts—a vital component in semiconductor manufacturing—but would also adjoin the company's current fabrication plant.
LTD Material is known for its precision-engineered products, essential in the wafer manufacturing process. With the help of the grant, the company plans to offer specialized training for CNC machinists and glass blowers, which are high-skill technical roles that do not demand a college degree yet provide ample career opportunities. In a statement obtained by the Governor's office, LTD Material CEO Kevin Nguyen expressed his company’s commitment to meet the increasing demand from U.S. semiconductor foundries while enhancing national security through reduced dependence on overseas suppliers.
Senator Sarah Eckhardt, representing Austin, voiced her enthusiasm for the local job creation imminent from this project, "I'm excited for the many good jobs this project will create locally and sustain for years to come." According to a press release from the Office of the Texas Governor, the investment represents a strategic maneuver to maintain Texas' leading position at the forefront of America's technological advancement.
The Texas CHIPS Act, signed into law by Governor Abbott in 2023, established the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund and the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Consortium. These initiatives, managed by the Texas Economic Development & Tourism Office, aim to bolster the state’s influence in the semiconductor industry through research, design, and manufacturing, ensuring that Texas remains a leading hub in this pivotal sector.
