A Texas jury found Sarah Hartsfield, a retired military veteran, guilty of murdering her husband with a fatal dose of insulin. Juror Tom Strandlie told Click2houston that the jury reached a unanimous verdict in just a few minutes, noting her action of setting herself as the Apple Legacy Contact as a key factor.
Detective Skyler Rocz pushed for a full investigation into Joseph Hartsfield’s death, which led to evidence that resulted in Sarah Hartsfield being sentenced to life in prison. "I just had to disagree," Rocz told "Dateline" about her supervisor’s doubts, as reported by NBC News. During the seven-day trial last fall, Sarah Hartsfield was accused of giving her husband a toxic dose of insulin, which medical staff at Houston Methodist Hospital could not reverse despite his low blood sugar. She claimed to be asleep on narcotics after surgery, but phone records showed she was actively using her phone while he was in critical condition.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered Sarah Hartsfield's past, including allegations of a suspected murder plot involving her third and fourth husbands and a reopened fatal shooting case claimed as self-defense. Evidence from Joseph Hartsfield's phone led to a search of Sarah’s device, showing constant arguments and her desire for her husband to leave the house. Rocz told Dateline, "I kind of felt a little weak to my knees," after the guilty verdict. Strandlie said to Click2houston, "This was the first time in real life that I saw bad people doing bad things." Hartsfield is serving a life sentence at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Hobby Unit and has appealed her conviction.
