Oakland County authorities have charged three men for their alleged roles in a violent shootout at a Southfield gas station that left two innocent bystanders injured. The incident, which took place last October on Southfield Road near 10 Mile, involved rival gangs and triggered a broad investigation spanning multiple law enforcement agencies. As stated by CBS News Detroit, suspects DeAngelo Brown, 22, from Sterling Heights; Amaju Dozier, 23, from Auburn Hills; and Romello Johnson, 23, from Harper Woods have been apprehended and face a variety of serious charges, including assault with intent to murder and weapons offenses.
The shootout quickly and dangerously unfolded as two groups opened fire on each other, striking two people who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. In a statement obtained by ClickOnDetroit, Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren detailed how the investigation leveraged both "traditional detective work and advanced surveillance technology" to identify and arrest the suspects involved.
Investigators identified the gangs as "Exit 218" and "700," which police say were involved in the dispute that spiraled into a public shootout. Security footage captured part of the chaotic scene, showing the suspects exchanging gunfire, with one victim struck in the arm and another, frighteningly, shot in the upper abdomen near the heart. According to FOX 2 Detroit, authorities noted that one of the wounded bystanders still has a bullet lodged in a location too risky for surgical removal.
Southfield PD's intensive investigation paid off with the eventual capture of the suspects. Dozier and Brown are accused of having begun the shooting after spotting Johnson at the gas station. Brown is said to have continued shooting as Johnson returned fire, hitting not just each other but innocent citizens as well. As Chief Barren told ClickOnDetroit, "You come into our city, commit these crimes. We have some really good detectives here." The extensive collaboration between the Southfield detectives, the Tactical Crime Suppression Unit, Oakland County Auto Theft Taskforce, and the FBI-Oakland County Violent Crime Taskforce was pivotal to identifying and arresting the suspects, underscoring a committed multi-agency effort to address gang violence.
The charges against the suspects reflect the severity of the incident, and the prosecutor's office is taking a firm stance in the pursuit of justice. In a report by CBS News Detroit, Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald emphasized that while they seek to bring the culprits to justice, broader strategies are necessary to combat gun violence, which she described as a "public health crisis."
