Tragedy struck on San Antonio's West Side last Monday night, as two individuals perished in a house fire. According to FOX San Antonio, a distress call placed by a woman trapped within a closet kicked off the grim sequence of events. The call reported she was separated from her husband after a fire erupted, shortly before 11 p.m., at their residence off South San Dario Avenue, near West Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard.
Upon arrival, firefighters faced an intense blaze and barriers including an iron fence, and burglar bars that obstructed immediate access to the home. As reported by KENS 5, despite the challenges the house's physical impediments posed, the fire crew managed to locate the couple and extract them from the inferno. Both victims were subsequently rushed to BAMC, their condition at the time was unknown.
These strenuous rescue efforts ultimately could not forestall the grim outcome. The individuals were pronounced dead following their transportation to the hospital. The battalion chief on-site noted the single-story home, with its metal roof, was presumed to be a total loss, a statement echoed by fire department officials and compounded by the visible damage from outside the burned structure.
Officials say the cause of the fire is still under investigation. A woman reportedly called for help from inside a closet before she and her husband were pulled from the flames. Both were taken to a hospital, where they later died, officials confirmed. Despite the efforts of first responders, the fire destroyed the home, leaving the community grieving the loss of the two residents.
