The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is asking Texans to reconsider their travel plans as a winter storm approaches, which could potentially wreak havoc across much of the state. Road treatment operations have already commenced, with TxDOT crews treating roadways in preparation for the freezing temperatures and possible precipitation that are on the horizon. According to their newsroom, as of Wednesday, "more than 1 million gallons of brine had already been used to pretreat roads."
Interestingly, while the agency is readying nearly 400 trucks for sanding and brine application, their advice for residents is to avoid travel over the weekend. "Roads will be dangerous, so staying off the roads is the safest option," said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams, in a statement made by the TxDOT. For those who find it unavoidable to drive, useful and current road conditions can be found on the Drive Texas website.
The measures taken by TxDOT are aimed at preemptive safety as the frost takes aim at Texas. Their crews will focus on major highways, interstates, and key connectors, as well as known trouble spots like bridges and overpasses. The agency is poised to operate around the clock to keep its crews ready and responsive as the weather system evolves.
In the event that Texans must drive during these risky weather conditions, TxDOT urges caution and kindness on the roads. Practical tips for safe driving have been shared, including giving TxDOT vehicles space, staying informed of weather changes, and carrying an emergency kit. For road assistance or updates, TxDOT reminds motorists they can call their Travel Information Line at 1-800-452-9292.
