The U.S. Attorney's Office reported a surge in immigration enforcement in the Western District of Texas, filing 209 new cases from January 16 to January 22 targeting offenses like alien smuggling and re-entry by individuals with past violent crime convictions. One case involved German Rodriguez-Hernandez, who allegedly confronted an ICE officer in Austin, with the press release stating, "the ICE-ERO officer was exiting his vehicle when Rodriguez-Hernandez intentionally veered his vehicle from its traffic lane into the driver’s side door of the ICE-ERO vehicle," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Another case involves Julio Leal, a U.S. citizen from El Paso, who was charged with attempting to transport illegal aliens for $800 per person to a stash house. These cases show federal efforts to target human smuggling networks and support law enforcement, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
