Luigi Mangione, who has been charged in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, appeared in court regarding the search and seizure of his backpack during his December 2024 arrest. According to CBS News, Mangione, wearing tan prison clothing and with his hands unshackled, attended a hearing to determine whether the search of his backpack at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania was lawful.
The defense is contesting the search, describing it as warrantless, and is seeking to suppress the evidence obtained, which includes a 3D-printed handgun and a survival kit. Law enforcement officials stated that it is standard procedure to take possession of a suspect’s property for both security and initial inspection. Judge Margaret Garnett is scheduled to oversee jury selection beginning September 8, as reported by CBS News, with the trial’s start contingent on the determination of whether Mangione will face a capital case.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty to multiple federal and state charges, including those related to Thompson’s death. His defense team is seeking to dismiss two of the counts, one of which carries the possibility of the death penalty. The evidence found in Mangione’s backpack is considered central to the prosecution’s case, as it is presented as connecting him to the crime.
If the court rules against the death penalty, the trial is scheduled to begin on October 13. If Mangione is to face potential capital punishment, the proceedings would instead start on January 11, 2027, as reported by ABC7NY. The timeline of the trial depends on the court’s decision regarding the possibility of a capital case.
