Universal City Council has taken a decisive step toward the establishment of a new Mobile Food Truck Park, passing a resolution in a 4-2 vote on Tuesday. The approval pushes forward a plan to develop an empty lot situated at 1980 Universal City Blvd, which sits between the Mod Wash laundromat and The Peaks apartment complex, both calling this neighborhood home.

Funding for this project will come not from the city's coffers, but via the Economic Development Corporation, which has agreed to pour $124,276 into public infrastructure upgrades. Enhancements are set to increase both pedestrian and vehicle accessibility while also improving safety at a nearby intersection. This economic injection is tasked with delivering a series of amenities that will serve the needs of the local community and food enthusiasts from farther afield. Such amenities, according to a Universal City notice, include space for six food trucks, an outdoor eating area featuring 10 tables, 18 parking spaces among which handicapped accessible spots, three bike racks, a trash enclosure, outdoor restrooms, and a monument sign.

It was back in 2021 that the council set rules for Mobile Food Unit Parks, a time when some Texas cities found themselves grappling with their management. Concerns over the potential traffic implications of the new park led Councilmembers Bernard Rubal and Mayor Pro Tem Christina Fitzpatrick to cast dissenting votes against the resolution. The Mayor Pro Tem expressed apprehensions about traffic problems that might arise as a result of the park's introduction.
