UNLV basketball recently hosted a Game of Recognition and Inclusion to honor athletes with special needs. During the event, the athletes participated in timeout activities and a halftime exhibition game alongside the team. KTNV reported on the significance of the event.
Hoop Camp, a foundation supporting people with special needs through sports, organized the event. Founder Steve Garrity told KTNV, "These events — this is their Super Bowl, their NBA championship." Attendees said they were equally moved by the inclusion.
UNLV says the partnership reflects the university’s mission to serve the entire community. Gene Canal, UNLV’s senior associate athletics director for marketing and fan engagement, told KTNV, "We’re here for the entire community — and that means making sure everybody feels welcome." The event gave athletes like Aylward the chance to experience college-level competition in front of a packed house.
Aylward’s mother described the event as real inclusion, a sentiment echoed by others in the stands, according to KTNV. UNLV went on to win their game against Air Force, 51-48, while the event highlighted the importance of participation and inclusion for all athletes.
Hoop Camp’s Instagram post celebrated Coach Pastner’s first win at their event, saying, "UNLV ...incredible day of inclusion with Hoop.Camp Thank you to all that makes this happen." The post highlighted the event’s focus on inclusion and participation for all athletes.
