In the rollercoaster match that gripped fans at the T-Mobile Arena, the Vegas Golden Knights managed to, once again, pull off a dramatic comeback, edging past the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 6-5 overtime victory yesterday. Jack Eichel emerged as the hero with his OT goal just over two minutes in, securing a sixth consecutive win for Vegas, according to a report by News 3 Las Vegas. Former Maple Leaf Mitch Marner faced his old team with a mixed reception, but nevertheless contributed two assists to help sink the visitors.
The Golden Knights' Tomas Hertl forced the game to overtime, with a goal with only seven seconds left in regular time, which he executed off a pass from Eichel. Eichel himself finished the night with four points, as reported in a statement obtained by NHL.com. Moreover, Pavel Dorofeyev seemed to have tied the game to only quickly find his would-be hat trick goal disallowed for an offside call – decision that quickly changed the narrative of the game.
On the Toronto side, William Nylander and John Tavares each tallied a goal and an assist, but Nylander's contribution was cut short due to a lower-body injury. The loss adds to Toronto's frustration, coming off another recent defeat at the hands of the Utah Mammoth. Vegas goalie Adin Hill marked his return from injury with 23 saves, some of them critical to keeping the game within reach for the home team.
Despite the joy of victory for Vegas, Toronto coach Craig Berube expressed discontent about losing the game in such a fashion. "It's frustrating to lose this game tonight. We got off to a great start. We played really well tonight as part of the game. We've just got to be smarter in certain situations, that's what it boils down to tonight," Berube told NHL.com. Meanwhile, Mark Stone from the Golden Knights extended his points streak to 10 games, adding a goal and two assists to the scoresheet. Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are set to host Nashville next, while the Maple Leafs aim to rebound against Winnipeg tomorrow.
