A bus transportation incident took place last Friday evening involving the Vermilion High School ski club, fortunately resulting in no injuries. The school district confirmed that while returning from a trip to Peek’n Peak ski area in upstate New York, the bus encountered a stray tractor-trailer wheel and tire on Interstate 90. This obstruction led to the bus swerving through traffic before it came to a stop, as detailed in a social media update by the Vermilion Local School District.
Despite the bus sustaining damage to the left-side wheels and tires, driver Kelly King and club advisor Joe Schneid managed to evacuate the students safely, reports Cleveland19. After the incident, a replacement bus was arranged by the district's transportation director, which brought all members of the ski club back to the high school. "We sincerely appreciate the expertise and care with which our teachers and transportation professionals navigate situations like this one to ensure the safety of our students," Interim Superintendent Wes Weaver expressed gratitude for the staff's quick thinking.
This sentiment was echoed in a statement obtained by Fox8, underscoring the importance placed on student safety by the district and the professionalism of the school’s staff during emergencies. The school administration has not yet disclosed whether there will be any changes to the ski club's future travel arrangements or additional safety measures in response to the incident.
