As Ohioans layered up against the chill this past weekend, they could take solace in the National Weather Service's forecast, assuring a respite is on the horizon with temperatures expected to climb significantly in the coming days. The warming trend is set to take place after a rather nippy period, particularly for regions around Columbus and Cincinnati.
According to the National Weather Service Wilmington OH, the weekend saw conditions stubbornly resistant to change. "Below normal temperatures are expected through the weekend, with mainly dry conditions for the Ohio Valley." Despite the brisk outset, forecasts promise a gradual escalation in temperature and a decidedly springlike atmosphere by midweek, with rain prospects intensifying accordingly. This incremental change marks a transient reprieve from the winter's grasp as the region looks forward to much above normal temperatures.
Travelers and commuters around Columbus and Cincinnati were greeted with a mostly cloudy sky as they went about their Friday routines, though the grey sheet was expected to yield to clearer skies past the rise of the sun. While a mix of sun and clouds was anticipated during the daytime, "Temps topping out in the mid 20s near/N of I-70 to the mid/upper 30s near/S of the OH River," as described by the NWS. However, the forecast also mentioned an incoming system that would pass to the south, which could lead to an overcast ambience by evening.
Saturday's script was much the same, delivering more scenes of cloudiness, albeit without the worry of precipitation, as the weather system trekking east through the TN Valley was projected to remain south of the local area. Temperatures were slated to dip into the teens, near/N of I-70 to the mid/upper 20s near/S of the OH River overnight, but would rally to "the upper 20s to upper 30s from N to S, respectively, by Saturday afternoon," amidst the persistent cloud cover, according to NWS.
Looking ahead, the NWS indicates that the start of next week will introduce a noticeable shift with a ridge of high pressure and southerly winds prompting a climb in the mercury. This upward trend is good news for those weary of the winter wear, as temperatures are expected to nudge their way into the 40s by Monday, and may leap further into the 50s as the week progresses. Rain chances, while still uncertain given the distance in the forecast period, are bound to emerge in tandem with the augmented temperatures and southwest flow - especially around the midweek mark as disturbances travel through.
For the aviators among us, the weather service's aviation forecast has relegated any significant concern to the back burner, outside of some potential MVFR CIGs drifting around the area. "One band of MVFR CIGs near KCVG/KLUK will gradually shift to the S and out of the area early in the TAF period," ensuring navigators across the Ohio sky can breathe a bit easier – at least for this window of airspace forecasting.
