As a winter chill sets in that makes even the hardiest Wisconsinite think twice about stepping outside, Waukesha County has decided that discretion is the better part of valor when it comes to combating extreme cold. County Executive Paul Farrow announced a State of Emergency Declaration, advising the closure of multiple county facilities today. Among these, the Waukesha County Courthouse, Administration Center, and the Department of Health & Human Services are to remain inaccessible to the public, following predictions of 40 below zero temperatures.
The urgent announcement, as confirmed by the official Waukesha County Government website, will have the declaration in effect until 8:00 p.m. today. Essential personnel, however, including the tenacious souls of the Department of Public Works crews, Sheriff’s Deputies, and 911 dispatchers, will brave the cold to report for their regular shifts. "We don’t take these decisions lightly," Farrow was quoted as saying, "but with temperatures expected to hit 40 below zero, out of an abundance of caution and safety for our staff, we feel it would be best to keep our non-essential employees at home."
It's not just a local chill, but an enveloping freeze as the National Weather Service has issued an extreme cold warning for all of Wisconsin. Particularly for those in southeastern Wisconsin, where the cold grasp will tighten from midnight yesterday until 1 p.m. today. The decision to close the county offices was based on the severe weather advisory and underscores the county's prioritization of safety for both its employees and the public alike.
For residents now finding themselves in the teeth of winter's cruel bite, county services remain accessible remotely. Waukesha County Government reminds everyone that services can be procured online during the closure by visiting the county's website. This ensures that the lifelines of government assistance and public service remain open, even as the county's physical doors are forced shut by the hand of an uncompromising winter.
