An early morning fire on Wayside Drive ended with a Turlock homeowner under arrest, after authorities say he deliberately set his own property on fire and triggered a large emergency response.
Fire crews were called out around 3 a.m. Wednesday and arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from the main house and a second fire burning in a building behind it. Firefighters knocked down both blazes in about an hour and then stayed on scene for overhaul and investigation. Officials reported no injuries.
According to Turlock police, 41-year-old Noe Rodriguez was found standing near the burning home and made what officers described as “spontaneous statements” that he had started the fire on purpose. After conducting an on-scene investigation, officers arrested Rodriguez on two counts of arson, resisting arrest and on outstanding warrants, with no injuries reported, according to CBS Sacramento.
The city has seen arson cases before. In a 2025 incident, a Turlock man was accused of trying to set his family’s home on fire, an episode that also led to an arrest and a follow-up investigation by police, according to the Turlock Journal. City officials and neighbors have repeatedly warned that fires can spread quickly and that the aftermath, from investigations to repairs, can disrupt entire blocks.
Charges and penalties under California law
Arson is a felony offense in California, with penalties that depend on what is burned and whether anyone is hurt. Setting fire to an inhabited structure can carry a state prison term of three, five or eight years, while other arson crimes carry different sentencing ranges, according to legal summaries of Penal Code 451 at Shouse Law. A conviction can also bring fines, restitution obligations and collateral consequences such as loss of firearm rights.
Investigation continuing
The investigation remains active, and Turlock police have not released additional information about the suspected motive or circumstances surrounding the blaze, according to CBS Sacramento. Authorities have reiterated that no injuries were reported in the incident.
