The City of West Allis, WI Government has announced on social media that, citing extreme weather conditions expected on Friday, garbage and recycling collections will be suspended. The municipal services initially planned for Friday, Jan. 23 have been rescheduled to resume on Jan. 26. The notice comes in response to forecasts predicting severe weather that would impede the regular collection schedule and ensure the safety of the crews, according to the City of West Allis Facebook post.
Residents can expect adjustments to their waste removal services in the forthcoming week, running from Jan. 26 through Jan. 30. "Crews will be working on an adjusted schedule next week," the City of West Allis social media post stated, outlining the changes for each day. For example, those with a regular pick-up on Thursday, Jan. 22, can set out their bins again on Thursday or wait until Monday, Jan. 26, for collection. Friday's schedules are pushed to Monday, and each following weekday sees a similar shift to accommodate Friday's backlog and the weekend's closure of municipal drop-off sites due to the weather.
The city also provided a useful chart indicating when residents should have their bins ready for pick-up. It detailed the importance of setting out garbage and/or recycling by 7 a.m. on the first day listed in the altered schedule. "If your items are not collected on the first day listed, collection will take place the following day," the City of West Allis social media post further instructed. This update emphasizes the potential variability in collection pick-up times, which could differ from the regular schedule due to the pressed collection timeframe.
In addition, the Municipal Yard will be closed on both Friday, Jan. 23 and the following Saturday, emphasizing how extreme weather can force unexpected shifts in civic operations. The City of West Allis advised that inclement or extreme weather conditions, which may occur during the next week, could potentially prompt further changes to this temporary collection schedule. They urged residents to be aware and accommodating as the situation develops.
A reminder was also placed for residents ensuring that garbage and recycling carts are accessible to collection crews, preventing possible injuries or damage. "Carts that are frozen to the ground or buried in snow can cause injury to the collection crew or damage to the cart if they attempt to move the carts," as noted the City of West Allis in their announcement. Furthermore, the City provided a link to a map where adjusted days can be viewed for more specific guidance during this inclement weather adjustment period. They also extended an offer of assistance and information through their "Let Us Help" online form for those with questions about their trash and recycling service amid the weather-related upheaval.
