A house fire on San Antonio’s West Side turned deadly on Monday night when two residents were pulled from the burning home and later died at the hospital. Fire crews arrived just before 11 p.m. to heavy flames after a woman called 911 saying she was trapped inside a closet and separated from her husband, according to News 4 San Antonio.
The blaze destroyed the home completely, leaving it a total loss. Officials said both residents were located inside, rescued by firefighters, and rushed to area hospitals, where they were pronounced dead.
Fire Crews Hampered by Security Features
Firefighters said their entry to the house was slowed by security features on the property. An iron fence and burglar bars hindered efforts to get inside and attack the flames, News 4 San Antonio reported. Despite those obstacles, crews conducted an interior search, found both residents and removed them from the burning home.
Investigation Underway
Officials said the house is a total loss and that the cause of the fire remains under investigation, per News 4 San Antonio. Authorities had not released the victims’ names at the time of the report, and investigators did not immediately provide additional details. Officials said more information will be released when it becomes available.
Why Security Bars Matter
Security bars and fencing can slow rescues and increase the risk of entrapment, a hazard highlighted in a U.S. Fire Administration special report on burglar bars. The agency’s guidance warns that bars can block exits and sometimes keep rescuers out, and it recommends quick release mechanisms and pre-planning to reduce that risk. Fire departments frequently urge residents to ensure smoke alarms work and to confirm any window bars have interior, easy to operate releases.
Authorities ask anyone with information about the fire to contact investigators or the San Antonio Fire Department. This story will be updated as officials release more details.
