Retro Sips & Brews, the cozy Woodlawn coffee shop that doubled as a hub for community drives and a Little Free Library, has abruptly closed about seven months after opening. Neighbors and regulars say the spot had quietly grown into a modest gathering place, so the sudden shutdown has left volunteers, makers and nearby residents without their usual hangout.
Owners Cite Family Circumstances
According to CultureMap San Antonio, owners Shelley and Sarah Buchman said unspecified "family circumstances" forced the abrupt closure. Retro Sips & Brews took over the black-and-white checkered-tile Woodlawn storefront in May 2025, shortly after The Lemon Girls closed. New to San Antonio, the Buchmans leaned hard into neighborhood programming, rolling out craft nights, fitness classes and makers' markets in an effort to build a loyal following.
Community Drives Continued Despite Troubles
In a direct message to CultureMap San Antonio, the shop said, "We hope to somehow continue to do monthly drives to support our community," even as it shut the doors on the cafe. The Buchmans had used the space to collect nonperishable food, winter clothing and school supplies, and they kept a Little Free Library and a produce fridge stocked for neighbors. CultureMap reported that as the owners wind down operations, they are selling off kitchen equipment and furnishings.
Turnover At a Familiar Corner
The checkered-tile corner had previously housed The Lemon Girls, which closed in April 2025 after what MySA reported was a public plea for community support amid rising costs. Retro Sips & Brews' online ordering page now lists the business as closed, with most menu items marked unavailable. The quick turnover at the same small storefront underscores the financial pressure facing independent food businesses in parts of the city.
The Buchmans said they still hope to organize monthly drives and community events, adding "more to come," which leaves the door open for their neighborhood outreach to continue in some new form. For now, they are directing supporters to keep an eye on the shop's social media accounts for updates on donation drives and liquidation sales.
