A Sterling house fire, which took place this past Sunday and resulted in one resident being hospitalized, was accidental, according to the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal's Office (LCFR-FMO). In a social media post by Loudoun County Fire and Rescue, the fire, reportedly caused by an unspecified electrical event at a single-family home in Sterling, prompted a response from multiple local fire departments just after 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, February 15.
Multiple fire and rescue units from Kincora, Cascades, Lansdowne, Sterling Park, Moorefield, Ashburn, and Fairfax County were dispatched after several 911 calls reported a blaze that had the roof and rear of the residence in the 20400 block of Broad Run Drive engulfed in flames, during the efforts to control and extinguish the fire firefighters faced challenges as it had spread to the attic and various hot spots remained for an extended period which required thorough overhaul operations. Two occupants were inside the home when the fire began; both managed to evacuate, however, one adult sustained burns and was taken for treatment to a local hospital. According to Loudoun County Fire and Rescue's post, there were no injuries among the fire department personnel. The fire resulted in an estimated $384,384 in damage, which includes both the structure and the contents inside.
Interestingly, the social media post from the fire department stressed the importance of smoke alarms noting that the smoke alarms in the residence were not functional at the time of the incident, therefore failing to provide an early warning to the inhabitants, their emphasis on the critical role of working smoke alarms aims to encourage locals to keep their own alarms in check since these devices continuously monitor the air and can alert residents to danger whether they are asleep or awake. LCFR is offering free smoke alarm checks for Loudoun County residents, who are urged to contact 703-737-8093 or visit their website for further details.
The two displaced residents, in spite of the traumatic event, chose not to seek assistance from the American Red Cross. This information comes from a Facebook post by the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue. The incident once again brings attention to the vital role of proper fire safety measures and preparedness in preventing potential tragedies and minimizing the damage from home fires.
