
Akron's Spring Hill Apartments have come under scrutiny after reports of roaches in the mailroom and other areas have caused the United States Postal Service to put a temporary stop to mail delivery, as documented in a social media post from the City of Akron, Ohio - Mayor's Office. Residents also raised alarms about mold and general safety concerns, prompting city officials to step in, conduct inspections, and issue repair orders to the complex's management.
In response to the complaints, a tenant inspection checklist has been shared with residents enabling them to request quick inspections for any lingering maintenance or repair issues Akron officials have not only addressed immediate concerns but they’ve met with building management to ensure a plan of action that includes remedying the pest control issues, clearing trash compactor areas, fixing a broken elevator, and tackling the mold found in at least two apartments, according to the mayor's office. The building's management has responded by changing pest control providers, moving swiftly to address the highlighted issues.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, in the official statement, asserted, "The conditions at Spring Hill Apartments are concerning to our administration. Everyone in our city deserves safe, stable housing free of pests and other nuisance issues. I appreciate the willingness of building management to work aggressively to address these concerns for their tenants," and assured that housing inspectors will monitor the situation closely until all the issues are resolved. Further, Akron City Council President Margo Sommerville acknowledged the residents’ initiative in bringing the issues to light and expressed eagerness to see a consistent mail delivery service restored for these residents, according to the City of Akron, Ohio - Mayor's Office.
